Every winter the castle grounds at the top of Óbidos, the walled town about 80 km north of Lisbon, are fenced off, ticketed and turned into a Christmas park for families. This season’s Óbidos Vila Natal runs from Friday 27 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027, and its theme is Pinocchio and the World of Puppets.

What is inside the walls

The event takes place in the Cerca do Castelo, the enclosure below the castle, according to the municipal agenda. The organiser’s official map lists 21 stops for 2026, arranged in zones with names from the Collodi story: Geppetto’s Neighbourhood, the Master’s Workshop, a Frozen Sea, the Great Fish and the Fairy’s Kingdom.

Between them sit the fixtures that families come back for: a Christmas market, a Parisian carousel, a mini Ferris wheel, a post office for letters to Father Christmas and Santa’s House. The puppet theme brings a puppet theatre and a puppet workshop, and, perhaps the most interesting stop for adults, an exhibition of the Bonecos de Santo Aleixo, the rod puppets of the Alentejo folk-theatre tradition.

It is, plainly, an event aimed at children. Couples or older visitors after a quieter Óbidos may prefer to walk the lanes and walls of the town outside the enclosure, which are not part of the ticketed area.
